"If Coco Chanel and Alexander Calder had a daughter, Amy Ragsdale would be her name".
Elizabeth Spindletree
The middle child of seven, born and raised in Bucks County Pennsylvania, Amy Ragsdale is the self-proclaimed 'luckiest woman in the world'. After a brief stint at Bucks County Community College (where she failed Jewelry Making 101), Ragsdale moved to Maine and was fortunate to find a sales position at the seaside gallery of sculptor Anthony Heyl. For five years Heyl provided gentle encouragement and skillful instructions in the design and finishing of jewelry. This proved to be just enough to convince Ragsdale that she could start a business of her own when she returned to the Delaware Valley.
Back in Pennsylvania in 1989, Ragsdale set up a workbench in her basement and purchase a few tools. What could be best described as a melding of Plato’s statement “Necessity, who is the mother of invention. and Leonardo da Vinci’s, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. she cut, hammered, twisted and polished sterling and gold, producing earrings, necklaces and pendants with an undeniably clean style. Choosing to forgo a torch meant no flame or “pickle, which eliminated caustic fumes and acidic solutions and forced Ragsdale to come up with new, or recover the ancient, ways of connecting design elements, stones and fasteners. The hallmark of an Amy Ragsdale design was the fluid look and feel, combined with strength, which was created by these cold connections. Twenty years later, the techniques are still uncomplicated and the style, distinctly recognizable.
Keeping Ragsdale inspired are her four wildly independent, yet well-mannered children, many fabulous friends and the occasional correspondence with author and hero, Nelle Harper Lee. In her spare time she trains and reconditions horses and is a student of meditation teacher Edward Carlos.
In her audaciously reverent way, she sends out gratitude to all who have shared in this singular journey and looks forward to meeting many more.
